ACA Premium Estimator

Estimate your monthly ACA marketplace premium based on your age, household size, and projected income. Includes a subsidy calculation using current federal poverty level brackets.

How to use this tool:

  1. 1.Enter your age (and spouse/dependent ages if applicable)
  2. 2.Enter your expected Modified Adjusted Gross Income for the year
  3. 3.See estimated premium before and after the Premium Tax Credit
  4. 4.Compare Silver, Gold, and Bronze plan tiers by out-of-pocket risk

2026 update: The enhanced subsidies from the American Rescue Plan expired January 1, 2026. The subsidy cliff is back — households above 400% FPL ($60,240 single / $124,800 family of 4) no longer qualify for Premium Tax Credits. Use the calculator to see your actual 2026 estimate.

Health Sharing vs. Insurance Cost Comparison

Side-by-side comparison of monthly cost, annual maximum out-of-pocket, and what's covered (and not) between ACA insurance and health sharing plans.

Factor ACA Insurance Health Share
Monthly Cost $350–$800+ (after subsidy) $150–$400
Pre-existing Conditions Covered from day 1 Waiting period 1–3 yrs
Mental Health Required coverage Often excluded
Preventive Care Free (ACA mandated) Usually not covered
Legal Guarantee Yes — regulated No — voluntary sharing

Health sharing is not insurance and is not regulated by state insurance departments. Claims may be denied at the discretion of the sharing community.

Medication Cost Comparison

Compare GoodRx, Cost Plus Drugs, and your insurance copay for your most common medications. For many generics, the price difference can be $50–$200/month.

How to compare:

  1. 1.Look up each drug on GoodRx — enter your zip code or a zip near your current location
  2. 2.Check costplusdrugs.com — search the drug name, add $5 pharmacy fee
  3. 3.Call your insurance's member services line to confirm your current copay amount
  4. 4.Note: using GoodRx instead of insurance means the purchase doesn't count toward your deductible

Common finding: Metformin, lisinopril, atorvastatin, and other common generics are almost always cheaper through Cost Plus Drugs or GoodRx than through insurance with a deductible not yet met.

Coverage Gap Checker

Identify the gaps between your current coverage and what you'll actually need as a full-timer. Most full-timers discover gaps they didn't know existed before leaving.

Check these gaps before going full-time:

  • Out-of-network emergency coverage: Does your plan cover ER visits out-of-network? Most ACA plans do for true emergencies — confirm yours does.
  • Service area: Where is your plan's in-network area? HMOs may only cover in-network care within your home state except for emergencies.
  • Specialty care: If you see a cardiologist, endocrinologist, or other specialist regularly — can you find in-network providers on the road?
  • Mental health access: Can you see your current therapist via telehealth? Are they licensed in the state you'll be in?
  • Prescription refills: Can you get 90-day supplies? Does your plan require mail-order for maintenance medications?
  • Dental and vision: Your health plan almost certainly excludes these — do you have separate coverage?
